Asking for directions isn’t failure. Walking twenty minutes the wrong way to avoid asking is.

What feels like failure is the question. What actually costs you is the twenty minutes, the walk back, and arriving late in order to protect an image nobody was examining. Asking costs one sentence and a few seconds of mild exposure, and it usually comes with somebody being glad to help. We get the arithmetic wrong because the embarrassment is immediate and the wasted time is not.
Catch yourself next time you would rather struggle than ask. Give yourself a limit: five minutes stuck, then ask. A rule saves you from deciding while you are embarrassed.
How far have you gone wrong rather than admit being lost?
