The coworker who’s been there twenty years knows things that aren’t in any training video. Ask them.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Training materials cover the official version of a job: the steps, the policies, the way things are supposed to go. Somebody who has been there twenty years holds the other half, which is what actually happens when the machine jams, who to call when the system is down, and which rule everybody quietly works around. That knowledge lives only in people, and it leaves when they do.

Ask the longest-serving person on your shift how they would handle the task you find most awkward. Ask what always goes wrong. Most of them are glad to be asked and nobody has asked in years.
