Trust becomes easier when explanations remain consistent across audiences.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Telling slightly different versions to different rooms is one of the easiest ways to lose standing, and it almost never feels like lying while it is happening. Each version is shaped for its audience, and the versions eventually meet. What people conclude is not that you adapted; it is that they do not know which account was for them.

Before adjusting an explanation for a particular listener, ask whether you would be comfortable with all of your audiences hearing it together. If not, find the version that works everywhere. One account is easier to remember and far easier to defend.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which story do you tell differently depending on the room?
