Facts are loose pieces. Understanding is knowing how they snap together.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Collecting facts and understanding something are different stages, and only the second one holds. Separate pieces have to be stored one at a time and they fall out individually; once you know how they relate, each one holds the others in place and a forgotten detail can be rebuilt from its neighbours. Understanding is cheaper to maintain than memorising.

After your next bit of reading, draw how the pieces connect rather than listing them. Arrows, causes, what depends on what. Any gap you cannot draw is where you still have loose pieces.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which facts do you hold separately that probably connect?
