Ask your grandparents what they did for fun at your age. Their answer will reset your idea of “nothing to do.”

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Boredom is partly a function of expectation. A generation with fewer options filled an evening with walking somewhere, a deck of cards, whatever three friends could invent on a porch, and did not experience it as deprivation. Hearing that does not make your boredom fake. It does reveal that nothing to do usually means nothing already arranged for you.

Ask an older relative the question directly and get specific answers, not just the general shape. Then try one of them with your friends this week, badly and without irony. An evening you had to invent tends to stick better than one you scrolled through.
