Be a tourist in your own city for a day. You’ll find out you’ve been living somewhere.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Routine narrows a place to the five routes you need. Everything else becomes scenery, which is how people live somewhere for a decade and know almost none of it. A visitor has no routes, so they see the whole thing. Deliberately dropping your habits for a day gets you the same view without buying a plane ticket.

Take a Saturday and go only to places you have never been in your own town. The museum you skipped, a neighborhood across the river, a diner you have driven past. Bring one person and no particular plan.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where in your own town have you never bothered going?
