Complexity accumulates naturally; simplicity usually requires intentional work.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Systems, houses, processes, and schedules all get more complicated on their own. Every exception, addition, and special case is added by somebody with a reason, and nothing removes anything, so the accumulation is one-directional. Order does not maintain itself. If nobody is deliberately taking things out, it will only ever get denser.

Schedule a regular pass whose only purpose is removal. Once a quarter, look at what has accumulated and take something out. The habit has to be intentional because the accumulation is automatic.
