Sometimes the lesson isn’t the subject. It’s learning to sit with something hard for an hour.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some of what school is teaching has nothing to do with the material. Staying with something confusing for an hour without walking away is a skill in itself, and it transfers to every difficult thing you will ever take on. The subject is just what happens to be used to build it.

Take the class you find hardest and give it one uninterrupted hour this week, no phone, no switching tasks when it gets uncomfortable. Count the hour as the result, separately from how much you understood.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which subject taught you patience rather than its own content?
