The world doesn’t need you to be extraordinary. It needs you to be decent on a regular basis.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The pressure to be remarkable is loud and largely useless, because very little around you depends on anybody being exceptional. It depends on ordinary reliability: people who turn up, tell the truth, do their share, treat strangers properly. That is harder to keep up than it sounds, and it is what actually holds things together.

Pick one small reliable thing and be consistent about it for a fortnight. Taking the bins out, answering messages, not being late. Being counted on earns less applause than it deserves.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where could you be reliably decent rather than occasionally impressive?
