Ambition can quietly spend the very thing it was meant to be for. Each separate trade looks reasonable at the time: miss the birthday, skip the trip, let a friendship thin out, because the opportunity is now and the people will understand. They often do understand, and they also drift, and arriving somewhere impressive with nobody to tell is a poor return on all that work.

Name the two or three people you are not willing to lose on the way. Put something in the calendar with them this month and treat it as fixed.
