Learning your parents aren’t perfect is part of growing up. Forgiving them for it is the advanced level.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Seeing your parents clearly is disorienting, because they were the fixed point you measured everything else against, and now they are people with gaps and fears and histories of their own. Noticing that is the easy half. The harder half is holding both facts at once: that they got things wrong, sometimes badly, and that they were working with what they had. Forgiving is not a ruling that nothing hurt.
Take your time with this. If there is one small thing you can set down, set it down. If there is not yet, that is allowed too.
Which of your parents’ flaws are you still deciding to forgive?
