Every culture told its own stories about the same stars. Making meaning might be the most human habit we have.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Different peoples, with no contact between them, looked at the same scatter of lights and all did the same thing with it: made stories. The patterns differ and the impulse does not. Making meaning seems to be as standard in humans as language, which suggests your own urge to find a shape in what happens is not weakness or wishful thinking. It is a habit of the species.

Use it deliberately. Decide what story you are telling about this year, say it in one sentence, and check that it is a sentence you can live inside.
