Your history is yours to release at whatever pace you choose. Being asked a direct question does not oblige you to hand over the full account, and a short version is not a lie. Some people have earned the detail through years of being careful with you. Most have earned a friendly summary, which is a perfectly honest thing to give them.

Work out your two-sentence version of the thing people keep asking about, and practise it until it comes out easily. Use it with acquaintances without guilt. Save the long version for the few who have shown they can hold it.
