Copy someone’s outfit and you get their look. Copy their nerve and you get your own.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Imitation can go at two different depths. Copying the surface gets you a version of somebody else, always slightly behind, because the look came from their particular situation and yours is different. Copying the underlying move, which is usually some form of nerve, produces something unmistakably yours. The brave part transfers; the clothes do not.

Think of somebody whose style you keep borrowing and ask what they actually risk. Posting the unfinished thing, wearing it first, speaking up early. Do that version of it this week, in your own clothes.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose nerve would you borrow rather than their style?
