A strong opinion and an open mind can share a head. That’s what a grown-up conversation looks like.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Holding a view firmly and being willing to change it are not in conflict, though plenty of people behave as though they were. The alternatives are both worse: no opinions at all, which contributes nothing, or opinions welded shut, which learn nothing. What a grown conversation sounds like is somebody arguing hard and then saying that is a fair point.

Go into your next disagreement with a clear position and a stated condition: what would change your mind. Say that condition out loud. It changes the whole temperature of the exchange, and it keeps you honest afterwards.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Could one of your strong opinions survive a real argument?
