A double shift teaches you something school can’t: how long eight hours really is.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Classes are broken into pieces with bells and changes of scenery, which hides how long a day is. A long shift gives it to you straight, and the lesson lands in your feet. Once you know what eight hours of standing costs, every price tag changes meaning. A pair of shoes stops being a number and becomes an amount of time.
Next time you work a long one, do the conversion on something you want. Divide the price by what you earn in an hour and look at the result before you buy. Some things will still be worth it, and after a month you will stop guessing which ones.
What has work taught you that a classroom could not?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
