A long book feels endless at page forty. By page three hundred you don’t want it to end. Most good things start slow.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Early pages are work because nothing has been built yet; you are holding names and places with no reason to care about them. The reward comes from accumulation, which by definition cannot exist at the start. Most of what you would end up loving you would also have abandoned at page forty.

Set a fair threshold before you begin something, and make it generous: a hundred pages, three weeks of a class, five sessions of a sport. Quit after that if you still want to, with a clear conscience. Below the threshold, your opinion is mostly about effort. Above it, it is actually about the thing.
