Sounding bad at something new isn’t the opposite of progress. It’s the doorway to it.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being bad is what learning sounds like from the inside. The scratchy version is not a detour on the way to the good version; it is the early stage of the same process, and no path avoids it. What makes it feel like failure is comparing your first week to somebody else’s fifth year.

Count the bad attempts as work done rather than as evidence against you. A tally on your phone, five minutes a day, whatever makes it feel like accumulation. Tell one person you are learning something and that it sounds rough, which takes most of the pressure out of being heard.
