When a new teammate fumbles a drill, the veterans’ patience decides whether they come back tomorrow.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Whether a beginner continues often has nothing to do with the beginner. A bad first session is normal, and what decides the return trip is the reaction of the people who already know how, carried in a glance or a sigh or a word of help. Small amounts of patience from the right person keep people in things for years.
Find whoever is newest at something you are good at and make one deliberate gesture this week: explain the part everybody gets wrong, stand next to them, mention that your own first attempt was worse. Say nothing about the fumble itself.
How do you treat the newest person when they struggle?
