Your money goals are allowed to be boring to everyone else.

Saving for something unglamorous is hard to talk about, because it does not photograph and nobody asks about it. A deposit, a car that starts, a fund that means a bad month is not a disaster: none of it makes a good story. That is a problem with stories, not with the goal. The people whose finances look exciting are often not the ones sleeping well.

Write down the dull thing you are saving for and the number, and keep it somewhere only you see. Stop presenting it for approval. Put something toward it from the next shift and let it be nobody’s business.
