A quiet house and a peaceful house aren’t always the same thing.

Quiet can mean settled, or it can mean nothing is being said out loud. Those two feel completely different from the inside and look identical from outside, which is why the second kind is so hard to name: nothing is visibly wrong, and yet you are braced. If you grew up in a house like that, you may have assumed it was just what rooms feel like.

You do not have to fix the weather in a whole house, and it is not yours to fix. Smaller things help: one room or one walk where you are not braced, and one person you can say a true sentence to.
