“I’m still figuring it out” is an honest answer at any family reunion.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Not knowing yet is a real answer, and more honest than the confident sentence people are fishing for. Those questions at a family gathering are usually small talk in a suit, and whoever asked will have forgotten by the drive home. Pressure to produce a plan on the spot tends to produce a plan that is not true, which you then have to keep repeating all year.

Say the honest version and let it sit there. If somebody presses, add one thing you are doing now rather than a destination. Then ask them about themselves, which nearly always closes the subject.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you dread being asked at a family gathering?
