Art allows two people to understand different things from the same object.

The same painting hands one person their childhood and another person their grief, and neither is misreading it. A work does not carry a single meaning to be extracted; it provides material that each viewer finishes with their own life. That is a feature of art rather than a failure of clarity.

When you talk about something you love with someone who sees it differently, resist correcting them. Ask what they see. You will usually get access to a version of the work you could not have reached alone.
