You think you know your town, but you mostly know three routes and a drive-thru.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Three or four habitual journeys stand in for a whole town. Because those routes are so well known, the rest of the map quietly stops existing in your mind, which is efficient and also means you live in a small place inside a larger one. Knowing somewhere is mostly a question of how much of it you have walked. Most of yours is still unvisited.
Take one deliberate detour this week, on foot if you can, down a street you have never used. Go somewhere you have driven past a hundred times.
Which streets in your town have you genuinely never walked?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
