Read one long article to the end today. It’ll feel like walking after weeks on a moving sidewalk.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Short things carry you along, so you arrive at the end without having done much. A long piece makes you supply the momentum yourself, and if that has not been asked of you in a while it feels like effort, which gets mistaken for the writing being boring. The tiredness is yours, not the page’s.

Find one piece that takes twenty minutes and read it all the way through with nothing else open. Expect the first five minutes to be uncomfortable and keep going anyway. Do it a few times this month and your attention stretches back out, which shows up in everything else you have to read.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH
