Close your eyes for a minute and count the sounds. Most of your day happens in the background.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of what you are in is handled without you. There is a whole layer of your day you never consciously meet: the hum of the room, traffic three streets away, somebody moving upstairs, your own breathing. Your mind manages all of it and reports none of it, which is efficient and also means you live in a smaller day than the one you are in.

One minute with your eyes shut, counting, is the fastest way to prove it. Most people get to seven or eight sounds and are surprised by half of them. Do it once at home and once outside, and compare the two numbers.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How many sounds could you name around you right now?
