Giving becomes meaningful when it notices what someone actually needs.

REFLECTION
There is giving that is really about the giver: the impressive gesture, the thing you would have wanted, the help offered in the form you prefer to provide. Real generosity starts with noticing, which is slower and less satisfying and infinitely more useful to the person receiving it.
Before you help someone, spend a moment on what they actually lack. Sometimes it is money and often it is time, quiet, a lift, or somebody to sit with them. Asking is allowed and usually appreciated more than the surprise would have been.
What does someone close to you need that you have not asked about?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
