Charm is what someone shows you in five minutes. Character is what you notice after five months.

Charm fits inside a first meeting, and character only shows itself across months, in the dull stretches where there is nothing to be gained. Somebody warm and funny for five minutes has proved they can be warm and funny for five minutes, which is genuinely something and not the thing you need to know. How they behave when it is inconvenient is a separate question with a much longer answer.

When you meet somebody impressive, enjoy it and hold the verdict back. Watch how they treat people who have nothing to offer them. Give it a season before you decide what you have got.
