Write the letter you’ll never send. Sometimes you just need to see the words outside your head.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Something changes when a feeling moves out of your head and onto paper. Inside, it loops with no edges; written down it has a size and an order, and you can usually see what it is actually about, which is often not the thing you assumed. None of that depends on the letter being delivered, because the sorting was the point.

Write the whole thing to the person you cannot say it to, unsent, in one sitting. Keep it or get rid of it afterwards, whichever sits better. The clarity stays yours either way.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who would you write to if the letter never had to arrive?
