Being the new kid teaches you to read a room before you speak. That’s a skill you’ll keep long after you find your seat.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Having no standing in a room forces you to watch before you talk, because guessing wrong is expensive when nobody knows you yet. You learn to notice who defers to whom, where the jokes are allowed to go, which teacher means it. People who have always had a place never develop it, and it shows in every first week anywhere.
Keep using it on purpose once you are settled, since the habit fades fast when you feel comfortable. Spend the first ten minutes of any new group listening rather than establishing yourself. You will say less and land better.
What can you tell about a room before anybody speaks?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
