Notice which criticism you can shrug off and which one keeps you up. The second one hit something you half believe.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Criticism only sticks where it finds something already there to hold on to. Being called slow by somebody when you know you are quick slides straight off. The one that keeps you awake has landed on a suspicion you were carrying anyway, which is why it feels less like an insult and more like being found out.

So the useful work is on the belief rather than the critic. Ask whether the thing you half believe is actually true, and get specific, since vague suspicion survives forever while a specific claim can be checked. Sometimes it is partly true and fixable, and sometimes it was never yours.
