Disagreement tests whether respect was based on similarity.

Liking someone who agrees with you costs nothing. Whether respect survives a real difference tells you whether it was respect for the person or comfort in the resemblance. Plenty of relationships are only tested at the first significant disagreement.

Notice how you feel about someone right after they say something you think is wrong. If your regard for them drops sharply and permanently, that is worth examining. It may say more about the basis of the regard than about their view.
