A position that looks quiet in chess can be full of threats. Calm on the surface doesn’t mean nothing’s happening.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A position with nothing obviously happening can be two moves from collapse, and the players who lose those games are the ones who relaxed because nothing looked urgent. Quiet is not the same as safe. It often just means the pressure is building somewhere you are not looking, in a place that has not announced itself yet.

When things feel calm, use the calm to look rather than to coast. Ask what is quietly getting worse: a subject you are behind in, a friendship you have not tended, a bill accumulating. Fix the small version now.
