Ask for the recipe while the person who makes it is still in the kitchen. Cards don’t explain the pinch.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Written instructions preserve the steps and lose the judgement. A card tells you to add flour until it comes together, which means nothing at all until you have watched somebody decide what together looks like. Standing beside the person is a different kind of learning from reading what they wrote down.
Rather than asking for the recipe, ask to help make it. Do the stirring and the fetching, and ask what they are looking for at each stage. Apprenticeship is slower than a text message, and it is how the wordless parts get across.
What could you only learn by standing in someone’s kitchen?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
