Humor becomes wisdom when it punches through absurdity without punching down.

Humour aimed at the absurdity of a situation includes everyone, including the person telling it. Humour aimed downward at someone with less power is just cruelty with better timing. The difference is not always obvious in the moment and it is always obvious to the person on the receiving end.

Check who is being laughed at when you make a joke. If it is somebody who could not respond without cost, that is worth reconsidering. The funniest people manage to be sharp without needing a target beneath them.
