Feeling sure about the call doesn’t mean the replay agrees.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Confidence and accuracy are produced by different parts of you, and they come apart more often than feels possible. You saw it from one angle, at speed, already expecting a particular outcome, and your mind handed you a clean memory anyway. That cleanness is what makes the feeling so convincing and so weak as proof.

When you are certain about something checkable, check it. Look at the footage, the message you are sure you sent, the time you are sure you agreed. Being wrong a few times while that certain is what teaches you to hold it more loosely.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When were you absolutely certain and plainly, provably wrong?
