Read the bad reviews of your own work twice: once to feel it, once to learn from it.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Nothing useful survives a first read. Your attention goes to the tone, the unfairness, the one line that is definitely wrong, which leaves no room for the two sentences that might be correct. Separating the passes lets you have the reaction and then come back as somebody who can actually read.

Read it, close it, and leave it until tomorrow. Then go through with a pen and pull out anything specific and repeatable. Ignore the rest without guilt, because you have already given it all the attention it deserved.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What criticism of your work could you reread more calmly now?
