Calling someone “naturally talented” can be a quiet way of skipping over all their hours.

REFLECTION
Talk of natural talent is comfortable for everyone except the person who did the work. For them it quietly erases the early mornings and the years of being bad at it in private. For you it offers an exit, because if they were born with it there is nothing you failed to do. That is the real function of the word most of the time.
When you catch yourself using it, ask the other question instead: what did this person practice, and for how long. Ask them directly if you can. The answer is usually less magical and much more useful, since it describes something you could also start doing.
Whose work have you dismissed by calling them naturally gifted?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
