The word typical deserves a question about whom it excludes.

Typical is a word that quietly does a lot of excluding. Whoever is described as the typical case sets the default, and everyone else becomes a variation to be accommodated, if they are considered at all. The word sounds neutral and is nearly always a choice about who counts as standard.
When you see the typical user, patient, family, or employee invoked, ask who is being left out of that picture and what the arrangement costs them. Then design for at least one of those people specifically. It usually improves the thing for the supposedly typical case as well.
