A vocabulary of insults makes nuance difficult to think with.

If the only words available for describing people you disagree with are insults, your thinking becomes as coarse as your vocabulary. Nuance requires terms for partial agreement, mixed motives, and reasonable people arriving somewhere you did not. Without them, every disagreement collapses into a judgment of character.
Try describing a position you dislike using only neutral language and see whether you can state it in a way its holder would recognise. If you cannot, you probably do not understand it yet. That exercise is uncomfortable and it is the fastest way to improve the quality of your own arguments.
