A digital copy has no wear to tell you how often somebody loved the original.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

A worn book falls open at the page someone returned to. A photograph is creased where it was carried. Digital copies carry none of this, so the record of use, which is the record of love, is simply absent. Every copy is equally pristine and equally silent about its history.

Keep a few physical things that are allowed to wear. And where your important material is digital, make some kind of trace yourself, notes in the margins, a list of what you returned to, a saved copy of the version that mattered. The wear will not happen on its own.
