An error copied instantly can travel farther than the correction that requires thought.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Sharing something is instantaneous and evaluating it is not. So an error propagates at the speed of a button while a correction requires someone to read carefully, check, and then swim against a story people already believe. The asymmetry is structural, not a failure of anyone’s diligence.

Give yourself a rule of not sharing anything striking until you have checked one thing about it. And when you have passed on something wrong, correct it in the same place with the same visibility. Very few people do this, which is exactly why it is worth doing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which false thing have you passed along before checking it?
