A saved draft is a record of a self the world never had to answer.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

An unsent draft is a version of you that never had to face a response. It is often more honest than what you eventually sent, and it is also untested, since it never met the other person’s reaction or the consequences of having said it.

Drafts are useful for exactly this reason. Write the unsendable version to find out what you actually think, then decide separately what to send. And if you have a folder of them, reading it occasionally will tell you something true about what you have been carrying and not saying.
