A shortcut through a neighborhood is somebody else’s front door becoming a thoroughfare.

The convenient cut-through is somebody’s street. What is a route to you is a home to them, and traffic that seems trivial from inside a car is noise, risk, and the loss of a quiet road from the pavement.
This is a small thing to carry and it changes behaviour. Drive as though the road were where you lived. And more generally, when you are passing through a place, remember that everyone around you is not passing through, and adjust the amount of disturbance you consider acceptable accordingly.
Whose home do you drive past as though it were scenery?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
