A fence can create privacy on one side and disappearance on the other.

The same fence is privacy from one side and exclusion from the other. Somebody gains a garden they cannot be overlooked in, and somebody else loses a route, a view, or the sense of being part of what is on the other side. Both effects are real and only one is usually considered.
Whenever a boundary is put up, including a social one, ask what it looks like from outside. You are entitled to your privacy. It is worth knowing what it costs the people on the other side, because they will experience it whether or not you intended it.
What have you walled off that you also stopped seeing?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
