A vacant luxury apartment and a crowded shelter can exist within the same view.

Empty homes and people without homes can sit within sight of each other, and the arrangement is not a paradox or an accident, it is a set of incentives working exactly as designed. Nobody chose this outcome directly and a great many people chose the conditions that produce it.

It is easy to become numb to this because it is so visible. Rather than carrying general despair about it, find the one local thing you can affect, a service, a policy consultation, an organisation, and do that consistently. Diffuse outrage produces nothing that a small persistent commitment does not do better.
