A view can be privately owned while its loss is shared by everyone nearby.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
A view is owned by whoever holds the land in front of it, and its loss falls on everyone who could see it. That mismatch, private control over a shared amenity, is why so many disputes about buildings feel unfair to the people affected and entirely legitimate to the people building.
Most of what makes a place pleasant is shared in this way, held informally by everyone and controlled formally by a few. Where there is a chance to protect something like this, it happens well before construction, and afterwards the only honest thing to do is grieve it.
What did your neighbours lose when one owner decided privately?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
