A house sale assigns a price to rooms that carried incomparable events.

A valuation looks at square footage, condition, and the street. It cannot look at the corner where someone waited up, the kitchen where the news was delivered, the room a child was brought home to. The number is accurate for what it measures and it measures none of that, which is why selling a family house is disorienting in a way selling other assets is not. Two entirely different accountings meet and only one of them is written down.

If you are facing this, it may help to separate the transaction from the mourning rather than expecting the price to acknowledge the life. Photograph the rooms, or write down what happened in each, before the furniture goes. Then let the number be only a number.
