You may call an experience boring when it refuses to assign you a special role.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Sometimes boring means nothing here is about me. The event proceeds, nobody needs your contribution, no role opens up, and the resulting flatness gets reported as the thing being dull. It is a real feeling with a misleading label.

When you are bored, ask once whether the thing is uninteresting or whether it simply does not require you. If it is the second, you can either find something to attend to properly or accept being a spectator. Both are better than concluding it was not worth attending.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you dismissed as dull where you had no part to play?
