A feast makes enough visible; ordinary provision often does not get the same witnesses.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A feast is where enough becomes visible. Ordinary provision, the daily and unremarkable act of making sure people are fed, happens without witnesses and is therefore easy to overlook entirely. The celebrated version of generosity is the exceptional one, while the sustaining version runs unobserved.

So notice the person who does the ordinary feeding, at home or anywhere else, and say so out loud. It is the kind of labour that gets thanked only when it stops. And if you are the one doing it, the absence of acknowledgement is a fact about visibility, not about the value of what you are doing.
